Her latest film ‘Shibpur’ is releasing later this month and Swastika Mukherjee’s new avatar as a leader of a mafia gang has already created quite a lot of buzz since the official trailer of the political thriller came out. And now, the versatile actor is getting ready for yet another challenging role of an investigative journalist in ‘Shibpur’ director Arindam Bhattacharya’s new film ‘Durgapur Junction’. This one will also be a thriller and it will see Vikram Chatterjee playing a young cop.
Set in the backdrop of the industrial town of Durgapur, the film's plot follows the mystery behind a series of murders and a desperate struggle of a journalist to unravel the mystery with the help of a young strong-headed police officer.
Apart from Swastika and Vikram, the thriller also stars Ekavali Khanna, Rajdeep Sarkar, and Pradip Dhar in important roles. This will be the third time Swastika and Vikram will share the screen after their previous two films ‘Aami O Aamar Girlfriends’ and ‘Saheb Bibi Golam’.
The story of ‘Durgapur Junction’ is inspired by a real-life incident from USA and Arindam has recreated that story against the backdrop of Durgapur. “This is a serial killing case and some medicine and cyanide were involved in it. FBI was initially left clueless but after 6 months of investigation they managed to track down the killer,” shares the director without divulging much about the storyline of his film. He took inspiration from that incident and it became the backbone of his story.
Incidentally, Swastika is also the protagonist of Arindam’s soon-to-be-released film ‘Shibpur’ and the actor recently came up with sexual harassment allegations against the co-producer of the film. It kicked up a social media storm. So, did the director cast Swastika as a surprise element for the film? Arindam insists that he spoke to the actor about this film during the dubbing session of ‘Shibpur’ and she agreed to do the film.
The film will be shot in Durgapur, Bolpur, and Kolkata during June-July and is expected to release in winter this year.
