German-born actress Suzanne Bernert’s portrayal of Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi has grabbed the headlines as much if not more than the movie ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ itself. She has been in this industry since 2005 playing a wide range of roles on both small and big screen. But, how many of you know this versatile actress has a Bengal connection? Yes, you heard it right!
Suzanne has acted in two Bengali films – ‘

Ramdhanu

’ directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy and ‘

Iti Mrinalini

’ directed by none other than Aparna Sen. The pretty actress still remembers the day she got a call from Aparna Sen.

“It was amazing. I couldn’t believe she called me and that too in the beginning of my career. I had already watched

. At first I thought somebody’s pulling a prank. Then she came on the line and said, so you don’t want to believe I want to work with you? Shooting for the film was a superbly creative experience. Even we went for shopping together. I was in Kolkata for the first time and the hospitality was so heart-touching. It’s definitely one of the highlights in my career. My character in Iti Mrianlini I played an English speaking character,” said Suzanne.

Working with Shiboprosad and Nandita was also an equally amazing experience for the actress, especially the lunch she had on the set during Santiniketan shoot. “Ramdhanu was another great experience. It’s was a different setup. We shot in Santiniketan. And I still remember the lunch we had on the set. The entire unite in one big table and there’s loads of fish. I enjoyed a lot. It’s like a picnic. In Ramdhanu I was playing a girl who is trying to be a part of a Bengali family and I spoke Bengali as well. Nandita helped me a lot” added the German-born actress.
However, Suzanne is looking forward to act in more Bengali films as she has so many fond memories about Kolkata. She still remembers the Howrah bridge, the markets and the Bengali food.
