Sreeja Dutta: My friends were flabbergasted after I bagged the role in ‘Bagha Jatin’
Sreeja Dutta is on cloud nine and why not? The young girl is making her big screen debut as Indubala, acting alongside the famed Dev, in Arun Roy's much-anticipated film, ‘Bagha Jatin’. During a recent media interaction, Sreeja opened up about her feelings and experiences surrounding this pivotal role.
Sreeja emphasized that while playing the role of Dev’s on-screen partner is significant for her, her true connection is with her character, Indubala Debi. She expressed an overwhelming mix of emotions, stating, "It's hard to articulate the deep emotions I feel right now. There’s excitement, joy, and of course, nervousness."
The journey to securing this role was not a walk in the park for Sreeja. She emerged victorious among a staggering six thousand other hopefuls who auditioned for the role. Reflecting on this feat, she recalled her astonishment upon her selection, "Out of the six thousand hopefuls, I never thought I'd be the one chosen." What worked in her favor, as she later discovered, was her facial structure which bore a striking resemblance to Indubala Debi, giving her an authentic look reminiscent of women from that era.
The news of her landing the role took her friends by surprise. They were initially shocked, but their surprise quickly turned into elation. Sreeja expressed gratitude towards her supportive friends, mentioning how they came to her aid during her semester exams, and providing her with study notes. "Juggling shooting and studies was a challenge, but I was fortunate to have friends who had my back," she noted.
In the past, Sreeja had worked on a music video directed by Raj Chakraborty and also featured in an advertisement alongside Mimi Chakraborty. When asked if these experiences helped her overcome her camera shyness during auditions, she confessed, "Despite those prior experiences, I was still a bit camera-shy during the Bagha Jatin audition." However, the team's support helped her overcome this.
Discussing her training for the role, Sreeja spoke highly of Director Arun Roy. She described him as a mentor who provided invaluable guidance, helping her get into the skin of her character. "Arun Roy's profound knowledge and insights shaped my portrayal of Indubala. He guided me on the nuances, the changes to incorporate, and the mannerisms to adopt. I followed his direction with utmost trust. Additionally, having Dev da on set was truly beneficial," she added.
‘Bagha Jatin’ is set to release in theatres on October 19.
