Its been 15 years since Ranjit Mallick was visible on the small screen. And now, he is back again on the idiot box and this time around, its for Sandip Chowdhurys Jugantar.Ask Mallick why he took a hiatus from television and he says, I have done television when serials like Datta, Grihadaha and Sesh Proshno were made. Offers did come my way but I got too busy with movies.
Moreover, nothing came my way that was extremely exciting. But Jugantar has a subject that is extremely thought-provoking. It deals with how our value system has changed from the pre-Independence to the post-Indepence period. I play a school master, Sukumar, who never compromises with his values.
Chowdhury is excited to have got Mallick on board. We dont share a professional relationship. Dada has worked with my father (Anjan Chowdhury) and he is like a father figure for me on the sets. I couldnt have found another mature actor to play this part.
Executive producer Sukumar Chatterjee says, We havent cast Ranjit Mallick because of his popularity on the big screen.
The character demanded an actor of his maturity. Weve cast all newcomers in the serial. Dipankar De is also a part of the cast. While Jugantar is keeping Mallick busy, he is also playing Raveena Tandons guide in Raja Sens Laboratory. As a parting shot, Mallick says, I am cutting down on my work. Doing serials is a different experience and I must admit that I am enjoying it.
