Shoojit Sircar wants to make 'Dhanyee Meye' in Hindi
'
During a media event at the recently concluded Kolkata International Film Festival the ‘October’ director expressed his desire to remake the Bengali cult classic in Bollywood as he spoke about the celebration of Bengali cinema’s 100 years.
“Speaking about Bangla chobi always ends with Uttam Kumar. You can’t just ignore his importance in Bengali cinema. I can’t express how I feel when I watch his movies. Every Uttam Kumar film is relevant even today. We are discovering him in a new way every day. I have always wanted to see 'Dhanyee Meye' being remade in Hindi. I spoke to many directors about this. But nobody showed interest. So, I have decided to make it myself. I will make it in Hindi. What a gem of performance it was from Uttam Kumar, Sabitri chattopadhyay, Jaya Bhaduri, Partha Mukherjee,
'Dhanyee Meye' was all about Bengal’s love for football. In a village where football is religion, Uttam Kumar was cast as a middle-aged man whose day begins and ends with nothing but football. As an owner of a regional football club, he seeks only the champion's trophy. However, the irony is the enemy club’s owner is also desperate to win the match. The match itself turns out to be a fun filled event when Uttam Kumar's club scores ten goals. Furious villagers interfere and things ultimately take a hilarious turn.
