Sheena Bora murder to be made into film
The Sheena Bora murder case is all set to go wide-screen with director Agnidev Chatterjee being the first to announce a Bengali film inspired by the case.
With its cocktail of money , lies and murder, it was only a matter of days before a film version came along. Agnidev has already started on the script, with Rituparna Sengupta in the lead role as the character inspired by Indrani Mukerjea.
1x1 polls
The actors, who will slip into the roles based on Sheena Bora and Peter Mukerjea, are yet to be decided.
Agnidev, though, is at pains to explain that his film is only loosely inspired by real-life incidents. Yes, the film is based on the Sheena Bora murder case, but it is a work of fiction. The case is sub-judice and as a filmmaker, neither am I judgmental, nor do I have a single point of view on the case. Our film starts with Ishani (the character based on Indrani) being taken into custody and the entire film is her life in flashback through the interrogation process. I was stunned by the case like everyone else but never thought of making a film on it. It was only on the insistence of my friends and family that I started working on the story. What could a child do to instigate her mother to kill her?
We watch the same events from the points of view of the different people involved. The film also shows Ishani's life from the time she was 19 to the present day -the different circumstances she was in, the various men in her life, the way she climbed the social ladder and reached the top -all of it will be i there. You could say it is a diabolical re-telling of Madame f Bovary or Maya Memsaab, said Agnidev, who's earlier done films like 3 Kanya, based on the Park Street rape case. The film, though in Bengali, will have Hindi and English dialogues.
Rituparna, who has already done six films with Agnidev, said, Agni always thinks of outof-the-box films. He came to me with a stark story based on the f recent murder case. However, it t is not a biopic and I am not playing a character based on just one real-life person. It is a work of fiction and as an actress, I am always game for challenging roles. We hear that Paayel Sarkar may play the chief investigating officer, while Kaushik Sen has been shortlisted to play Ishani's first husband. That apart Sayani Dutta, June, Rajesh Sharma, Sreela Majumdar, Biswajit Chakraborty and Shataf Figar may be part of the project. The film, untitled till now, will go on the floors on September 20 and is aimed at a Diwali release.
