Sean Banerjee and
Rwitobroto Mukherjee have teamed up for the first time in a Shakespeare-inspired short film directed by noted theatre director Avanti Chakraborty.
Titled ‘A midnight Tempest’, the 4 minute-long short film is based on a chapter about the Shakespearean characters Puck and Ariel from the book Shakespeare our Contemporary written by Jan Kott. While television’s heartthrob Sean Banerjee plays the role of Ariel the very talented Rwitobroto will be seen as Puck.
It's also an Indo-Bangladesh collaboration.
Puck is a character from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and Ariel is from ‘The Tempest’. Both the spirits meet in a bar in Kolkata at midnight and they question and interpret the idea of ‘freedom’ according to their contemporary reality of time and space.
The director says this short film tries to interpret the philosophy, politics and crisis of these classic characters in contemporary time and space in a universal context.
“A midnight Tempest is definitely going to be a very special project for me. It’s my first venture in filmmaking, I have directed several projects for theatres. The script of this short film is a result of an academic and artistic collaboration between professor Ahmed Ahsannuzaman from Bangladesh. It was especially interesting for me because I have dealt with a theatrical content for the first time and have told a Shakespeare story through the lens. We have an amazing cast, people will definitely get some power-packed performance from this short film,” shared Avanti Chakraborty while speaking about the short.
