The iconic film
Mahanagar directed by
Satyajit Ray is now restored in 2k resolution and it is finally coming home to Indian screens after having screened at over forty festivals/cinematheques/museums worldwide.
The restored version of the film is screened in its original Bengali Language with English subtitles in a multiplex chain all across Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata
Filmmaker
Goutam Ghose said, “I am extremely happy to know that the restored version of Satyajit Ray masterpiece is again on big screen. Some productions have restored box office success films mostly for OTT or Television presentation. But this initiative by this multiplex chain is truly adorable. Ray directed
Mahanagar along with superb cinematography by Subrata Mitra and realistic set design by Bansi Chandragupta for large cinema screen. I congratulate this exemplary effort of Kamal and Varsha Bansal.”
Director Aparna Sen commented that she is delighted that
Mahanagar is being re-released. “It is one of my most favourite Ray films with a stellar performance by Madhabi Chakraborty. It is also the best feminist film I’ve ever seen, that too made by a man and so relevant even now! This film bears out the fact that all great artists are at heart androgenous.”
