Veteran Bengali actress-singer
Ruma Guha Thakurta breathed her last in Kolkata on Monday morning at her Ballygunge residence. She was 84. Within hours after the news of her sad demise broke, the Bengali film fraternity was left in shock as Tolly big names like
Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rutuparna Sengupta and others paid their homage to the actress whose son is none other than popular singer
Amit Kumar.

Ruma Guha Thakurta started her acting career in 1944 with Amiya Chakrvarty directed ‘Jowar Bhata’ and later became popular with her superlative acting in films like ‘Personal Assistant’, ‘Antony Firingee’, ‘Dadar Kirti’, ‘36 Chowringhee Lane’, and ‘Asha O Bhalobasha’ among others.
Mira Nair's ‘The Namesake’ is her last film she worked in.
The veteran actress also enjoyed a colourful career as a playback singer, crooning her voice for films such as 1958's ‘Lukochuri’, 1961's ‘Tin Konya’ to 1970's ‘Bakso Badal’ and 1976's ‘Mera Dharam Meri Maa’.
