The first project that aimed to bring these two iconic actors together was directed by the late Rituparno Ghosh. Ghosh had the ambitious vision of casting Amitabh Bachchan as the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and Madhuri Dixit as Ray's muse, Madhabi Mukherjee. However, apprehensions about offending the Ray family led to the unfortunate shelving of the project. Rituparno later lamented his missed opportunity, particularly the chance to work with Madhuri Dixit, who he praised for her unparalleled body language, radiant smile, and photogenic presence. He confessed, "We were almost on the verge of working together but destiny was not kind towards us.”

In various interviews, Rituparno had discussed his reverence for Satyajit Ray and Tapan Sinha, crediting them for teaching him the nuanced art of balancing realism, aesthetic value, and commercial aspects in filmmaking. He had successfully directed Amitabh Bachchan in another film, "The Last Lear," which was an adaptation of a play by Utpal Dutt called "Sesh Sahajahan." Despite his deep-rooted desire, the seasoned filmmaker never had the chance to direct this dream pair, although he had a distinguished portfolio that included A-list actors like Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgn, Manisha Koirala, Kirron Kher, and Preity Zinta, among others.

The second film that could have seen Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit share the screen was 'Bandua,' to be directed by JP Dutta in 1989. This film was so short-lived that it never progressed beyond the initial 'mahurat' shot, a customary beginning for Indian films. This is another example of an unfulfilled vision that keeps fans wondering "what could have been."

Another director, Somnath Sen, who had made 'Leela' starring Dimple Kapadia, also aspired to bring Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit together in a project. Regrettably, this too never materialized.
