He has been living in this rented house for over nine years now. Thats enough time to stamp it with his signature. And thats something you realize as soon as you step inside Riingos pad. Its obviously a filmmakers home, and blown-up movie posters are part of the dcor, lining the walls of the staircase.
But the real deal is the room on the mezzanine floor, which has a wall-to-wall collection of DVDs. Its enough to tell you that the owner only eats, sleeps and drinks films.
THE WALLRiingo has redefined the concept of The Wall. Its classic neighbours envy and owners pride with a floor to ceiling collection of some 4,000 DVDs. I started collecting in 2001/02. When I used to work in Bangladesh, I had a similar DVD library there. After returning to Kolkata, watching movies was my only addiction. I began collecting DVDs of movies, music videos, diploma films and documentaries. And its not just movies of Ray, Ghatak and Uttam Kumar, I have a huge collection of films by Bhanu Bandopadhyay and Bikash Roy. A rare Thai cinema collection forms an important part of the world movies series. Besides, I have a large number of sports films, he says. So, when people walk in and see the fab collection, dont they want to borrow DVDs? I never lend my movies out, Riingo says. Biographies of the great masters, live concert recordings to silent Sherlock Holmes movies Riingo has them all in his collection. The price tag of his wall? Roughly 2.5 lakh.
TABLE ART On his travels, the director is also in the habit of picking up knickknacks for his den. He points to a stool covered in amazing film graffiti he picked up from Bangladesh. They have a unique way of marketing movies there. Just before a release, the producer gets posters of the film painted on stools and has them delivered to movie-goers residences. I have this stool that promotes the movie Chokher Jol starring Shabnur, he says.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, CUT Two years ago, Riingo set up his own editing studio in his pad. This is one of the most high-end editing studios for digital cinema in Kolkata. After having shot my movies, I edit them here. But I dont have any plans of letting out the editing studio on rent. At night when my work gets over, I snuggle into a makeshift bed right here with my two dogs Simba and Ninja! he says.
