The detective genre was an unexplored area in Indian cinema when ‘
Sonar Kella
’ became a significant milestone in 1974 for its unique subject matter and its scope. And now these vintage pictures from the sets of ‘Sonar kella’ is going viral on social media after an ardent
Feluda
fan shared the snaps on Facebook. These rare pictures will surely make you relive the thrills of Feluda’s adventure.
Ray had used Indian history to explore the mystery genre. Based on a novel of the same name by
Satyajit Ray himself, it deals with detective Feluda’s adventures. He gave Bengali literature a series of short stories involving Feluda and
his cousin
Topshe
. Any cinephile who loves classical detective storytelling will surely become a fan of Ray after watching this pleasing yet thrilling mystery adventure.
The detective thriller tells the amazing story of Mukul, whose mysterious drawings seem to relate to a previous life as they show things and places he has never been before. Joining hands with a parapsychologist, he embarks on a
journey to discover the site of this previous incarnation. When Mukul’s quest for this place (a site encrusted with gold and jewels) gets reported in the paper, a group of thieves follow along. Luckily for Mukul, Feluda, the iconic Bong detective comes in for his rescue.
Like almost every Satyajit Ray films, the hero here is the crisp story. The narrative turns out to be so gripping that it’s bound to get the attention from one and all. Be it the ten-year-old boy or a man in his sixties, ‘Sonar Kella’ will make you stand up and take notice in every scene.
Soumitra Chatterjee playing Feluda brings in that inherent Dadagiri in his attitude which fits the character
exceptionally well.
Siddhartha Chatterjee
and
Santosh Dutta
as his two sidekicks Topshe and
Lalmohan Ganguly
aka Jatayu delivers the ideal support.
Santosh Dutta gives the detective’s quest the much needed comic overtones. His sequences with Feluda are a treat to watch. Ajoy Banerjee and
Kamu Mukherjee
as the two thugs are just brilliant to say the least.
