After the laughter riot called Damadol, director Manoj Michigan is ready to roll again, this time with a crime thriller 89 starring Saswata Chatterjee, Raima Sen and Shataf Figar. The flick, which also stars Barun Chanda, Dr Kausik Ghosh and Biplab Dasgupta, has been written by the director himself. Supriyo Dutta is the DoP, while
Raja Narayan Deb is composing music for the film, which hit the floors on Sunday.
The film is set in Kolkata and parts of North Bengal. It is all about crime, the ambition for success at any cost and how it affects peoples psychology. Purba (Raima), a psychologist, goes through a journey, filled with mysterious incidents and starts exploring the sequences to arrive at the cause of her mental turmoil. This brings us to the question related to the title of the film
89. It is a journey of numbers from the past... Purbas past, said the director.
Elaborating on the storyline, Manoj said, Anup (Shataf) and Purba are friends and the former, an inspector from the anti-terrorist squad, tries to support Purba in every sense possible to unravel the mystery that lies buried in her heart. The script builds up mystery at every step, oscillating between the past and the present and questioning what next?. It explores the case logically, but races through thrills and twists at every turn. The audience will be surprised to see the truth of Purbas life, as the graphical scripting will introduce the character of Sabyasachi, a mental patient played by Saswata Chatterjee. I will not disclose anything more.
I play Purba, a psychologist. The character is vulnerable, yet assertive and soft. But when the time comes, she erupts with a latent aggression that seals the fate of the story, said Raima, who is all nerves and excited about sharing screen space with Saswata.
Sabyasachi is a very difficult character and the whole day, I keep thinking how to go about it so that it looks believable on screen, said Saswata.
