In recent years, the rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platforms has ignited discussions about their impact on traditional cinema. Some argue that OTT platforms are encroaching upon the theatrical experience, leading to a clash between the two mediums. However, actor Rahul Banerjee feels the other way and insists that upon closer examination, it becomes clear that there is no inherent conflict between OTT and cinema. In fact, these two forms of entertainment can coexist and even complement each other, bringing about a new era of storytelling and audience engagement.

The Expanding Horizons of OTT

According to Rahul who recently completed the shoot of Srijit Mukherjee’s web series on Byomkesh Bakshi, OTT platforms have revolutionized the entertainment landscape by providing viewers with unprecedented access to a vast array of content. "From blockbuster movies to original series and documentaries, these platforms offer a diverse range of storytelling options, catering to a wide range of tastes and preferences. Moreover, OTT allows for the exploration of unconventional narratives, experimental filmmaking, and diverse voices that may not find their place in traditional cinema. He further adds that by removing the limitations of physical distribution, OTT platforms have democratized content consumption, giving filmmakers and storytellers more opportunities to reach their audience," he explained during an exclusive chat with ETimes.

Cinema's Enduring Magic

While OTT platforms offer convenience and accessibility, cinema continues to hold a unique allure. Rahul feels that the big screen experience, enhanced sound systems, and the communal atmosphere of a movie theater create an immersive environment that cannot be replicated at home. “The cinematic experience fosters a sense of anticipation, collective reactions, and shared emotions that enrich the viewing experience. Additionally, the grandeur of visually stunning films, epic narratives, and large-scale productions find their truest expression in the theater, leaving an indelible impact on audiences,” he said.

A Synergistic Relationship

OTT platforms and cinema can coexist harmoniously, each complementing the other's strengths. “Many filmmakers and studios now adopt a hybrid release strategy, where movies simultaneously debut in theaters and on OTT platforms. This approach maximizes reach and caters to diverse audience preferences. OTT platforms also serve as valuable marketing tools for theatrical releases, generating buzz and expanding a film's reach to potential viewers who may not have access to theaters. Likewise, the theatrical release of a film can boost its visibility and demand on OTT platforms, creating a mutually beneficial relationship,” explains the actor whose next film ‘Fotema’ addresses the serious issue of communal harmony.

Expanding Creative Boundaries

The advent of OTT platforms has also spurred a surge in content creation, pushing filmmakers and storytellers to explore new narratives and experiment with different storytelling formats. Rahul shares, “The freedom provided by OTT platforms allows for bold storytelling choices and diverse representation, addressing previously unexplored themes and perspectives. Furthermore, the availability of data and analytics on OTT platforms provides valuable insights into audience preferences, enabling creators to refine their craft and cater to specific demographics.”

Contrary to popular belief, there is no clash between OTT and cinema. Instead, they exist in a symbiotic relationship, each enhancing the other's strengths and expanding the possibilities of storytelling. According to the actor, “OTT platforms bring accessibility, variety, and the freedom to experiment, while cinema offers a unique immersive experience that captivates audiences.”
