Indrashis Acharya’s ‘Pupa’ is touted to be the first Bengali cinema based on the subject ‘Euthanasia’ or ‘mercy killing’.
It narrates the mental and emotional turbulence of a confused son struck between his lucrative job in the US and his father- who suffers a brain stroke after his wife’s demise and eventually slips into a coma.
Speaking about the same, director Indrashis said, “‘Pupa’ is mainly a social drama reflecting the perfect dose of emotions and sentiment during a personal crisis and he believes despite not being a potential blockbuster, it will create a place in the audience’s heart.”
Elaborating further, he added, “Many films these days go for a lot of deviations from the initial storyline to attract the masses.
But I can assure, in this film, since the beginning till the end, we haven’t gone through any such deviation. People will relate to the story. I think through this film, we have been able to set a trend for realistic films. I want more people to watch the film so that more filmmakers can be inspired to make this kind of film. There are moments in the film when the audience would be left with teary-eyed. I know ‘Pupa’ is not a blockbuster film but let me ask you a question, is the cinema only to be meant for entertainment?”
Starring,
Rahul Banerjee,
Sudiptaa Chakraborty and
Kamaleshwar Mukherjee in the lead, the film is slated to hit the theatres tomorrow, July 27.
