Prabir Roy’s docu-feature, Jete Nahi Debo, starring
Sujan
Mukherjee, Dulal Lahiri, Shakuntala Barua, Rahul Burman and others, traces the
life
of
Uttam Kumar after he shifted to Moira Street.
“Uttam Kumar was a legend and people still want to know about him. The life of the
Mahanayak
generates the same interest even today. So, my project is a tribute to him as I knew him personally. In Jete Nahi Debo, I have tried to show his struggles, how he was there for his technicians and spot boys and other things that will not hurt anyone’s sentiments,” said Prabir.
He added, “Uttam Kumar was born on September 3, 1926, as Arun Kumar Chatterjee, but was probably destined to be the Mahanayak. The kind of fan following he enjoyed in Bengal and Bangladesh till his last day (July 24, 1980), was unthinkable for many of his contemporaries in Bengali cinema. In fact, we rarely came across a star of his calibre in regional cinema after him. However, Uttam Kumar deserved much more than what he got. He carried the Bengali film industry all alone on his shoulder for three decades, which is unparalleled in the world of cinema. Uttam Kumar, along with Suchitra Sen, gave the industry several hit films. This docu-feature will be treated from Abir and Ushashi’s point of view. Uttam Kumar’s contribution to the industry, his personal attachment with the technicians will also be shown, along with his versatile acting.”
Sujan Mukherjee, who plays Uttam Kumar’s role in this docu-feature, said, “It is a great honour to essay a stalwart like Uttam Kumar on screen. He is my matinee idol,” said Sujan.
