Polio Immunisation Day will be celebrated on 16th February for children in the 0-6 age group, as India faces a tough challenge to keep itself a polio-free nation, a status it has enjoyed since 2014. India also faces an imminent threat of a polio resurgence due to its neighbouring countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, both of which have a high number of active polio cases that have been detected.
Santoor maestro Tarun Bhattacharya said, "We must ensure that polio drops are administered to every child, as every section of society is vulnerable. I am proud that when India was a polio-endemic country, the Indian National Polio Plus Committee of Rotary appointed me as an ambassador to create awareness about the need for immunisation. Now, after almost a decade, I am back to propagate the message that we cannot afford to be complacent or let our guard down. We must ensure the immunisation of every child in our community."
