Its been close to 17 years that Sanjoy Nag, popularly known as Bunty in Tollywood, has known director Rituparno Ghosh. And now, he is all set to direct his debut project, titled Parapar that is based on a story and screenplay by Ghosh.Talking about this venture, the director says, I had gone to meet Ritu to discuss another project. As we started talking, the idea of making Parapar came up. Parapar is being done digitally and will be shot on RED.
Parapar is about emotional archiving. A bereaved mother (50), dumbstruck by the news of an accidental death of her 28-year-old son, comes to Kolkata to carry out the last rituals, pack and carry his belongings back to Delhi. Her three-day stay in Kolkata in her dead sons office-apartment, laden with memories and her constant interaction with his office colleagues (his only family in the city), makes her realise that the ownership of her sons belongings, tangible or otherwise, which she claimed to be exclusively personal, is actually ubiquitous, distributed among all his friends and acquaintances. So much so that it cant be packed and moved away. She also realises, her own presence in the midst of these unfamiliar people, the fact that she has been inhabiting their hearts and thoughts much before destiny brought them together. The relationships explored in the film go beyond the sexuality of the characters, says Nag.
This film is the starting point of a unique experimentation with fresh, adventurous and sensitive new-age films made within a commensurate budget to be jointly presented by Ghosh and Srikant Mohta. While the music for the film will be composed by Chandrabindoo, Shoumik Halder has been pencilled in as the director of photography. Since mine is an urban film, I think Chandrabindoo is the best bet at this point of time. Having listened to their songs, they will be able to do justice to my subject and my film. This is the first time that they will also be doing the background score and the sound design for a film. I am planning my sound design with the members of the band. Since Im trying to create a persona who isnt physically present in the scene, sound is a very important tool.
Ask Nag about his cast and he says, Ritu is playing a creative director of an advertising agency. Since he has already been in that profession, Ritu will lend a lot of authenticity to the role. He is someone who can force a director to actually make a film with Rituparno, the actor. He is one of the best actors we have today. While Deepti Naval plays the mother from Delhi, Raima Sen will be playing her sons colleague at the agency.
