Sen-sational is the word to describe Salil Sarkars Jhara Patar Bela. Primarily a telefilm and documentrary maker, Salil has just wrapped up the shooting of his first feature film, which is based on the life of Suchitra Sen. The film that stars
Madhabi Mukherjee,
Biplab Chatterjee, Raj Dutta and newcomer Sayantani Guhathakurta, will see Madhabi getting under the skin of her contemporary, the legendary Suchitra Sen.
Talking about the film, Salil says, The story revolves around an actor, who left her career at its peak. She is now a recluse, who lives with her brothers daughter. She never makes a public appearance. Credit for the script goes to Salil, who had earlier done the same for many a Raja Sen venture, including Desh and Chakraguha. About drawing inspiration from the matinee idols life, the director admits, Yes, the film is inspired from Suchitra Sens life. The character, who decides to lead a solitary life, is played by Madhabi Mukherjee. Ive tried to capture the inner crises of an actor at her helm her love, hatred and other intangible emotions. Even Sambhu Mitra had become a recluse at a certain point in his life.
Theres also a daydreaming sequence, where the protagonist imagines that her favourite hero appears before her eyes and proposes marriage to her. When we were shooting the sequence, technicians from the unit asked me whether its based on Uttam-Suchitra, Salil says, adding that he has weaved in fictional elements in the character. Suchitra Sen doesnt come from a theatre background, whereas my protagonist does. Biplab Chatterjee plays a prompter in love with Madhabi Mukherjee, says the director, whose short film, Little Angel, will be screened at the Kolkata Film Festival on November 14.
Also upbeat about this 10-minute film, the director informs, The short film has no dialogues. This has been purposely done as I wish to send it to various international film festivals. Music, which plays a vital role in Little Angel, has been composed by Saswata Chattopadhyay. The story of Little Angel revolves around two kids, their dreams and aspirations. Two of them belong to different economic backgrounds. One stays in a multi-storied building, while the other watches her from a tea shack, just across the road, Salil signs off.
