National Award winning Bengali director Utpalendu Chakraborty undergoes hip surgery, suffering from memory loss

The National Award winning Tollywood director, Utpalendu Chakraborty was admitted to the hospital early April. The 76-year-old director fell down at his own residence and gravely injured his hip. As per sources, the director underwent hip transplant surgery recently and still under observation at the hospital. However, Utpalendu is reportedly suffering from memory loss. The director is expected to be discharged from the hospital by next week, given his health condition stabilises.

However, his estranged wife, director, poet and activist Satarupa Sanyal hasn’t come to his aid during this trying time. His two daughters, actress Ritabhari Chakraborty and Chitrangada Satarupa have stayed mum as well. Satarupa, once married to Utpalendu, separated from the director long back. Ritabhari revealed a few years ago that her biological father abused her mother in an inebriated state and hence they separated. The actress also revealed that Satarupa Sanyal, her mother, brought up her and her sister on her own. On the other hand, Chitrangada has chosen to get rid of her father’s surname and taken her mother’s name. The actress goes by Chitrangada Satarupa now.

Utpalendu Chakraborty is one of the most remarkable directors of the Bengali entertainment industry. The veteran director created films like ‘Chokh’, ‘Debshishu’. He earned the National Award for Best Feature Film and Best Direction for ‘Chokh’ at the 30th National Film Awards. The film is set during the Emergency period in December 1975. The director portrayed the oppression and exploitation of Jute mill workers in Kolkata.
