Nagarkirtan, a film that was honoured with four National Awards last year, including Best Actor for
Riddhi Sen, could not release today. The impasse could be traced back to the differences that cropped up between the producers of the film. On February 7,
Joy B Ganguly
wrote to us in a text: “By an Order dated 6th February, 2019, the Acropoliis Entertainment, Surinder films and all of their assignees have already been restrained, by an order of injunction, passed by the Hon'ble District Judge of the Learned Alipore Court, from releasing the film
Nagarkirtan
in any format, be it Theatrical, Satellite or Online. They will have to stop all promotions with immediate effect, unless Mojo's name and my name as co-producer is incorporated. Such order was passed since they have illegally and unethically removed my name and logo of Mojo from the said film Nagarkirtan, in violation of my right over the said film, infringing my copyright over the film.” Though all parties came together at the discussion table, no solution could be reached till Thursday, when director
Kaushik Ganguly texted us, saying: “The order passed by the learned Alipore court restraining, release of the film 'Nagarkirtan' produced by Acropoliis Entertainment Pvt Ltd. has been vacated by the Hon'ble Calcutta High Court, today. Therefore there is no embargo in releasing the film. We are yet to receive a copy of the order passed by the Hon'ble Calcutta High Court. Therefore we are not in a position to comment on the order till we receive it.” Since there was an injunction on the promotional material, the makers could not reach out to the masses ahead of the film and lost out on theatres since there was no clarity on the matter. A source added that the team of Nagarkirtan is yet to receive a copy of the order that says there’s no embargo on the release. A revised date of release will soon be announced.
