Most critically acclaimed film adaptations of William Shakespeare’s works

William Shakespeare's enduring influence thrives within Indian mainstream cinema, where his timeless creations are deftly interpreted on multiple narrative levels. The universality of Shakespearean plays continues to inspire a wealth of adaptations, reimaginings, and artistic explorations across diverse mediums. Although Bengali cinema offers fewer adaptations of his works compared to other regions, the Bard's legacy is still vividly felt in Tollywood. Whether it's the unforgettable 'Othello' scene in 'Saptapadi' or the evocative 'Hridmajhare,' filmmakers have repeatedly drawn inspiration from Shakespeare's brilliance, and in doing so, have struck cinematic gold. This compilation showcases some of these remarkable film adaptations that artfully channel the essence of Shakespearean masterpieces.

The famous stage scene, where Krishnendu (played by Uttam Kumar) and Rina Brown (played by Suchitra Sen) portray climax of the 'Othello' drama turned out to be a landmark in Bangla cinema. The dubbing was done by legendary stage actors Utapal Dutt and Jennifer Kapoor, and it is seen as one of the most iconic moments of Bengali cinema history. The scene still carries a pleasant and poignant Shakespearian impression.

It’s actually not an adaptation of Shakespear’s work. National award winning director Rituporno Ghosh's Amitabh Bachchan starrer movie tells the story of a Shakespearian stage actor and it naturally enacts a lot of elements related to 'Shakespeare's works. The critically acclaimed drama also features Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, Shefali Shah and Jisshu Sengupta. 'The Last Lear' won national award for Best Feature Film in English.

One of director Ranjan Ghosh’s finest works, ‘Hrid Majharey’, stars Abir Chatterjee and Raima Sen in the lead roles and it’s touted to be the first direct Bengali adaptation of Shakespeare's work in Tollywood. Originally based on 'Othello', the film even had some key elements of 'Macbeth' and 'Julius Caesar' inserted into the narrative. As a tribute to the great dramatist, 'Hrid Majharey' has been included on the top ten Indian adaptations of Shakespeare in cinema list and arguably one of the top 5 world adaptations of 'Othello'.

The classic comedy is based on Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar's popular novel with a similar name, which itself was inspired by the Shakespearian play 'Comedy Of Errors'. In this movie, Uttam Kumar and Bhanu Bandyopadhyay were cast as a merchant and his servant respectively. They one day visit a new town but didn’t know about the existence of their twin brothers and it ultimately leads to a series of confusions breaking down a laugh riot.

It’s inspired by the best romantic tragedy from Shakespeare 'Romio And Juliet'. Aparna Sen directed 'Arshinagar' narrates the modern adaptation of the eternal saga on the backdrop of rivalry between two families and eventually ends at the death of the lead characters. In this Bengali adaptation, Dev and Rittika Sen did justice to the lead roles while Jisshu Sengupta was seen as the main antagonist. His character was sketched out of the Tybalt character in the original. Aparna Sen’s modern adaptation is set on the world of land mafias where love is doomed forever.

‘Hamlet’ is regarded as the most adapted drama written by Shakespeare. The famous play has seen interpretation and execution on a different level in every adaptation. Vishal Bharadwaj made its Hindi version on the backdrop of the burning situation of Kashmir in ‘Haider, but Anjan Dutt had something different in mind which motivated him to make 'Hemanta' which tells the story on the background of the Bengali sentiment and culture. Parambrata Chatterjee played the titular role in ‘Hemanta’.

Srijit Mukherji’s inspiration for this 2016 hit came from not just one, but two tragedies: 'Julius Caeser' and 'Antonio and Cleopatra'. Though both are different plays, these two classics bring one single historical connection that was explored in the modern context. The magnum opus has a huge cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Parambrata Chatterjee, Dev, Ankush, Rahul, Nusrat Jahan in pivotal roles.
