They were last seen together on the big screen in Mrinal Sen’s National Award-winning film, Mrigayaa (1976). And after 46 years, Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Shankar are reuniting for Avijit Sen’s family drama, Projapoti.
We heard that the film’s story revolves around a father and a son. While
Dev plays the son, Mithun essays the role of his father. Dev and Mithun were last seen together in Ravi Kinnagi’s 2015 film, Herogiri.
Dev, who is looking forward to sharing the screen with Mithun, said, “Getting Dada (Mithun Chakraborty) and Mamo di (
Mamata Shankar) on board after so many years is something. I share a father-son relationship with Dada in real life as well, so I guess that will help both of us display a better camaraderie on screen. Whenever I am in need, he is more than eager to help. He is my go-to person in real life. Dada loved the script and we all are waiting for the film to go on the floors. Despite Dada’s busy schedule and health conditions, he agreed to do the film. He even cooked luchi, aloo dum and chicken when we went to his house to hear the script - such is his warmth.”
Koneenica Banerjee and Ambarish Bhattacharya are also part of the cast. The film, which goes on the floors from July 5, will be shot across Kolkata and Varanasi.
According to a source close to the film, Mithun loved the story and gave his nod after working out the dates. “Dev was there when the story was being narrated to him. Mithun da is also very happy to share the screen with Mamo di (Mamata Shankar) after all these years. A new composer will score the film’s music,” said the source.
The director, whose debut film was Tonic, says the story shows how having different outlooks toward life creates a distance between a father-son duo despite their bond. “What circumstances lead to this consequence is what the family drama is all about,” he added.
Mrigayaa was based on an Odia short story, Shikaar, by Bhagbati Charan Panigrahi. It bagged the Best Feature Film and the Best Actor awards at the 24th National Film Awards. The film also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie, apart from being nominated for the Golden Prize at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival in 1977.
