From romcom to detective fiction.
Mainak Bhaumik, the maker of slick urban films like the hit, Bibaho Diaries, earlier this year, is shifting gears as he joins a host of other directors making detective movies — the only genre that seems to guarantee some sort of returns in a cash-strapped industry.
Byomkesh is the hottest property in this genre, with both Anjan Dutt and
Arindam Sil making films on the character.
Arindam also directs Saswata Chatterjee as Shabor, the tough-talking police detective, while
Srijit Mukherji has just released his second Kakababu film. Sandip Ray brought back Sabyasachi Chakrabarty as Feluda some months ago.
It is not clear if Mainak’s film will be a franchise adaptation or a new story, but news is out that
Paoli Dam, Ritwick Chakraborty and Anirban Bhattacharya will be cast in important roles. Mainak is slated to shoot the film early next year. All three actors confirmed that the director has approached them for the film.
“I am yet to hear the script but I am happy that Mainak is trying something new. It is an original story but I think it has a strong connection with a detective franchise and that is the USP,” said Paoli. While Ritwick stayed tightlipped about the film, Anirban told us, “It is an independent story as far as I know and Mainak has approached me for a pivotal role. But I’m yet to hear the script.” Mainak remained unavailable for comment.
