Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, one of Bengali cinema’s landmark created by
Satyajit Ray, has been selected as the opening film of the 24
thKolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) which gets underway from November 10. KIFF started its journey in 1995 and happens to be the second oldest and among the most prestigious film events in India.
The Ray classic, since its release in 1969, has been enjoying cult status among the audience even after all these years.
‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is still remembered as a technical masterpiece, given the rudimentary infrastructure Bengali film industry had, when it was made. It’s also the film’s golden jubilee year.
For the unintended the fantasy-musical drama was adapted from a 20-page short story by Ray’s grandfather Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury. ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is believed to be one of the most interesting decisions in Satyajit Ray’s career, given his tradition of making films with serious and strong social messages.
