Kalpana to be screened on Amala Shankar’s birthday

As the living legend Amala Shankar, wife of Uday Shankar, steps into her 100th year, there are celebrations galore in the Shankar family. On the occasion, Kalpana — a film by Uday Shankar about a young dancer’s dreams of setting up a dance academy that also features Amala Shankar — will be screened. The film was screened at Festival de Cannes in 2012 and was attended by Amala Shankar. Her daughter, Mamata Shankar, too joined her on that trip.

Said Ratul Shankar, musician and grandson of the legendary dancer, “There’s still a lot of curiosity around this film. And we have decided to screen it multiple times during celebrations.” The film, it’s said, has reflection of Uday Shankar’s life, who built a dance academy in

. It is also the only directorial effort by the internationally-acclaimed dancer.
