While waiting for the release of Prague and BMW, Chandan Roy Sanyal is now keeping himself busy doing theatre. The actor will be in town to stage his adaptation of Samuel Becketts Waiting for Godot titled Two Blind Mice on June 12 and 13. Sanyal has done plays in Kolkata before when he came down with Tim Supple for
A Midsummer Nights Dream. Ive also done a Habib Tanvir play in Kalyani.
But
TBM is very different from all the plays I have done in Kolkata before, the actor says.
In his adaptation of Becketts play, Sanyal is using a special technique called grips theatre. It is a technique where adults behave like kids on stage. I was commissioned by Sanjana Kapoor of Prithvi Theatre last May to do this play as part of the Prithvi Childrens Theatre Festival. I used the techniques of grips theatre where adults take on the garb of kids and mannerisms to convey the message. Initially, I was doing the play for kids between ages six and 14. The experiment worked for adults too. This form of theatre first originated in Germany. Sanjana suggested that I use this technique. So my adaptation of
WFG now works both for adults and for kids. I dont think such an experiment has ever been done before, he says.
As far as movies go, Sanyal is awaiting the release of
Prague where he plays an architect. Thats a psychological thriller. I had to play an insomniac there and slept for only two hours a day to look the part. In
BMW, I play an underworld informer. This Aditya Bhattacharya film is being edited by director Chandan Arora now and has been shot by Lisa Rinzler of Buena Vista Social Club fame.
As for Bengali movies, I have offers after my work was appreciated in Aparajita Tumi. But I havent finalized anything as yet, he says.
