Cinematographer Soumendu Roy might call it quits after this projectMrinal Sen one of the greatest ambassadors of the parallel cinema movement in India is now the subject of a documentary.
While Nripen Ganguli, winner of a
National Award for his movie
Bhombal Sardar (1984), has directed the docu, produced by the Films Division of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, three-time National Award winner Soumendu Roy is its cinematographer.
The celebrated cameraperson, who had worked on 21
Satyajit Ray films, revealed his plans to call it quits after this project.
I started off with Satyajit Rays documentary on Tagore and what better way to call it a day than shooting a docu on Mrinal Sen! Yes, if a very interesting offer does come my way, I will take it up. Otherwise, for me, this is it, said the octogenarian cinematographer.
Ganguli, whose association with Sen goes way back to 1947, said, The focus is on highlighting the philosophy of his life. The docu will feature parts of many of his films. But then, this isnt a biopic. He spoke for long hours about his works. A questionnaire was given to him beforehand and he had prepared the answers, which we used. In a way, the script is by him. Helping us with the project was Adinath Das. I might call the docu
Mrinal Sen: Doyen of Indian films, but we are yet to finalize that. The docu was shot between September 9 and 11 at the directors house.
