Rachita Chauhan, who has just tied the knot, says that her filmi career started by sheer chance and hopes that it takes off in a big way post marriage. The number of leading ladies in Tollywood who have walked the aisle and are still going great guns with their careers is far greater than their counterparts in Bollywood. The latest addition to this list is Rachita Chauhan.
The actor will soon be making her debut in the Rudranil Ghosh starrer Chaplin where she is playing director-actor Srijit Mukherjis love interest. Rachita has already registered her marriage though her social wedding will be held on February 21 just six days after she completes shooting Anindo Banerjees Chaplin. Awaiting release are two other movies Kamaleshwar Mukherjees Uro Chithi, where she plays Indraneil Senguptas colleague, who gets fired and banks on him to fight for her and Yogesh Mittals Yeh Faasley, where she plays a character whose accidental death leads to some uncomfortable questions for Anupam Kher.
Rachita, who has assisted cinematographer-turned-director Avik Mukhopadhyay and film-maker Pradeep Sarkar, says that she entered the film industry by chance. The casting director of YF spotted me in a coffee shop in Mumbai. I had met Rudranilda at the premiere of Notobor Not Out. Thats where he asked me to audition for the role and I finally bagged the part. The producer of UC saw my picture and recommended me to the director, who cast me in a music video and, subsequently, this film where I play Indraneil Senguptas colleague. I never thought of being an actor and was happy working behind the camera.
Though acting might have been a matter of luck by chance, it was another coincidence of sorts that her love interest in Chaplin also happens to be from her alumni. When I first met Srijitda for the workshop of Chaplin, I said I was from Presidency University. Though we werent batchmates, sharing notes about Presidency University, Pramoddas canteen and the lebu chaa for 2 inevitably featured in our conversations. Initially, I was a little apprehensive about shooting with Srijitda since he is a director. But he made things so comfortable for me. Before an intimate scene, hed make me laugh so much that it would immediately break the ice, she says, adding, that she believes that the presence of more and more educated actors and directors in Tollywood, who are in touch with world cinema, will only help restore glory to Bengali cinema.
Considering that she will be marrying into the royal family of Himachal Pradesh, how has she handled the issue of shooting intimate scenes on-screen? I have some intimate moments in Chaplin with Srijitda as well as in YF with Mazher Sayed (who recently tied the knot with Mouli Ganguly).
But, my husband, Captain Akhilesh Chauhan, understands and respects my work. Internationally, there are a lot of leading ladies who are married. As a newly married actor, I see no clash in my family life as long as I know what I am doing, she insists.
Rachita is now looking forward to balancing her professional career in tinsel town and a long distance marriage. Ive lived in Punjab in spite of being a Bengali. I come from an Army background and have changed 17 schools in my life. I tied the knot with my childhood friend. So, the understanding about past, present and future was always there. An Army wife has to be independent and strong. I find my strength in Akhilesh. Its a brand new life and Im loving it.
On a parting note, she says, I want to be a part of good cinema in both Hindi and Bengali. Someday, I hope, Ill reach a stature where Im capable enough to make good films. Right now, I have just begun learning.
