I am doing a Bengali film: Jayasundara
Bengali cinema couldnt have asked for more. Sri Lankan director Vimukthi Jayasundara, who has won the Camra dOr at Cannes, is reaching Kolkata today to finalise the script of his debut Bengali feature film.
Though the casting hasnt been decided as yet, Vimukthi is keen on having Tollywood actor Paoli in his film. If all goes well, shooting will begin in November in Kolkata and Santiniketan.
Vimukthi, who divides his time between France and Sri Lanka, won international acclaim when his documentary titled The Land of Silence on the victims of civil war was selected by several festivals including Marseilles, Rotterdam and Berlin.

Following this documentary, Vimukthi had enrolled as a post-graduate at Le Fresnoy-Studio National des Arts and subsequently, directed a short film titled Empty for Love that was officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2003 and won the Best Director Award at the Novo Mesto International Short Film Festival Slovenia in 2003. In 2005, his debut feature film, The Forsaken Land Sulanga Enu won the 2005 Camra dOr at the Cannes Film Festival. He is the first Sri Lankan to win this award. The directors second feature film, Between Two Worlds, was officially selected for competition at the 66th Venice International film festival in 2009 and was nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion.
Says Vimukthi from Colombo before taking a flight to Bangalore via Kolkata, Ive had several discussions with Vinod Lahoti about making this film. Ill be meeting him once I reach Kolkata. Though my cast hasnt been decided, Id want to discover Paolis talent when I make this Bengali film. Ive seen some of her stuff. Ill also be taking help of my friends in Kolkata, including Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, to get a feel of the language. Ask him to describe what his film could mean to cinema lovers of the city and the director says: Inspiration.
Bandopadhyay, who has been hugely inspired by Vimukthis works, is extremely excited with the news. Vimukthi is absolutely non-compromising in his films. Abbas Kiarostami has said that he is one of the finest new young film-makers of the world now. Itll be a privilege for us to see him work in this city. He will select a couple of other actors and technicians from Kolkata for his movie. This is a great opportunity for all those involved with independent film movement of Kolkata, Bandopadhya signs off.
