The modern day take on ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ seems to have been shelved with directors involved in other projects and one of the producers not interested in financing the film right now. Only a few months ago, a number of directors joined the bandwagon to make a spin off on the famous ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’.
The film rights of ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ are with Arijit Dutta, the owner of Priya Cinema.
His grandfather Nepal Dutta and father Ashim Dutta bankrolled
Satyajit Ray’s film under the banner Purnima Pictures.
Industry insiders suggest Arijit was eager to co-produce the reboot and even had a meeting with director
Anindya Chatterjee. But the recent fire at Priya Cinema made things difficult. Arijit spent almost 50 lakhs to renovate the theatre. Also, the fire department recently revoked its NOC issued to Priya Cinema. With the future of the hall looking not so good, Arijit now can’t finance the next ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ film.
Director
Pavel who recently registered a title ‘Googa Baba’ has now pushed the film on the backburner. Pavel is set to direct two films with
Jeet. While Pavel is still interesting in making the next installment of the iconic series, he wants make his move cautiously as Goopy and Bagha are still the most-loved characters in Bengali cinema and enjoy their popularity across all generations.
Prosenjit Chatterjee had earlier announced a film on Goopy and Bagha as well and had even launched the first-look poster. We hear it Prosenjit had spoken to both Anindya and Pavel regarding the project but even he is silent on it for the time being.
