Tollywood actress Mimi Chakraborty is refusing to bow down to online hatred. The Bengali actress, who is also a former Trinamool Congress MP (2019-2024), received multiple rape threats online for standing in solidarity with state-wide doctors’ protests over the RG Kar rape-murder case. After sharing a few examples of the vile threats Mimi had received online on her social media profile, the Cyber Crime Department under Kolkata Police took legal action. The actress recently took to social media to share an update about the same.

Mimi took to social media and shared, “UPDATE :( on the R*** threats) With help from Cyber crime department @DCCyberKP FIR has been lodged regarding this. Those accounts have been taken down and deactivated forever. Police is trying to trace the main two here coz they hav deleted all comments nd hav gone incognito.”

A couple of days ago, Mimi posted screenshots of some of the threatening comments she had received online. Mimi lashed out on social media and wrote, “AND WE ARE DEMANDING JUSTICE FOR WOMEN, RIGHT???? These are just a few of them. Rape threats have been normalized by venomous men masking themselves in the crowd, saying they stand by women. What upbringing and education permit this?” Mimi tagged the cybercrime division of the Kolkata police on X.

After the heinous rape-murder incident that took place at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, the entire nation came out on the streets demanding justice for the victim and the safety of women. Mimi had participated in a protest in person against the rape and murder of the said doctor in Kolkata. Apart from Mimi, Tollywood actors like Riddhi Sen, Surangana Bandyopadhyay, Sohini Sarkar, Sauraseni Maitra, and Ushashi Roy also took part in the protest ‘Reclaim the Night’, which was held on the night of August 14.

Mimi revealed that she had been receiving rape threats online for speaking up and taking a stand for the victim. Ace director Srijit Mukherji has come out in support of Mimi and shared her tweet with a warning to the perpetrators. Srijit wrote, "Celebder ghreena korun kintu bhebe chinte. Jail e internet naao pete paaren," which translates to "Hate the celebrities, but think twice before doing so. You might not be able to have access to the internet in jail.”
