Composer Indraadip Das Gupta about the Turkish influences in the music of ShotruThree of your songs from Raj Chakrabartys "Shotru" are being picturized in Istanbul. How do you think shooting in foreign/exotic locales for Bengali movies help in the improving the prospects of a movie? It helps to transport the mind into to a dream zone.
It also depends on what kind of cinema or script it is. If the film is about the hero and heroine only romancing in exotic locales, the audience also wants to see it that way. The newer the place, the better the adventure and fun.
Fatih Akin's documentary, "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul", shows how rich this part of the world is in terms of music. How much of the music from Istanbul have you used in your compositions?Ive also seen the documentary. Its awesome. I have tried to use some mid-eastern thread in two tracks and with a bit of Latin music. Thats the best I could do in terms of my knowledge as of today and the resources that I have.
Were you not tempted to use any Turkish musicians for these songs apart from the Indian singers? If you had the budget, who would have you wanted to work with?Yes, may be in future as the Bangla film scene is growing with every passing day. Some day, I would love to work and collaborate with them in some of my tracks. I am sure I will get the resources for that too.
Turkish music, especially that of Tarkan, has often inspired Bollywood and Tollywood. Are you aware of this trend?I have heard Tarkan. I feel, there are some songs that could have inspired our composers. But the influence is soundwise and not structural. As for inspiration, that is nothing new. Weve seen that happen in the past too. The only difference is that the media was then not as active as it is now.
You've scored a club number for this movie too. Is there anything different from the regular club numbers one hears in Bengali films? Its a new kind of sound as far as Bangla film music is concerened.. Its a fusion between Indian classical and Breakbeat.
What do you have to say about the standard of film music in Bengal today?By and large, the standard is good though some potholes will be always there.
Judging reality shows offers good remuneration these days. Have you ever considered judging any reality show? Not yet. Ive been saying no such offers all this while since I dont want to be judgmental. Even if I do, it will surely be for the fun of doing it. I will not do it for some extra money only.
