Ekavali meets her childhood hero

“Singh had been associated with the most glorious period in India's hockey history. I remember my dad had said that he was the only player who wore glasses and played hockey matches. He was a lion on the field. When I saw him, the first thing that came to my mind was how much my father admired him,” she added.

More than meeting her childhood hero, Ekavali was touched by the man’s humility. Gurbux told her that in

and a camera for winning the gold and he was very content. When he won the Arjuna Award, he travelled to Delhi by train to receive it. He said when they play the national anthem of the winning country, that's when the eyes well up with tears of joy. “Mr Singh and I got chatting and he told about how in his time there was only one motivation to play well — victory for the country,” she added.

In the end, Gurbux asked Ekavali about her profession and encouraged her to do the kind of work she believes in.
