Durga Puja is not only a moment of joy but also crucial for Bengal’s economy: Sampurna Lahiri

In a conversation with Calcutta Times recently, actress Sampurna Lahiri emphasised the significance of Durga Puja, not just as a cultural celebration but also as a vital source of livelihood for many.

The RG Kar tragedy has sparked a call to boycott Durga Puja until justice is served. She articulated how the festival brings together artisans, vendors, and countless others whose economic well-being depends on this festival. Sampurna said, “Our state is going through trying times. But Maa is coming home. Durga Puja is not only a moment of joy but also crucial for Bengal’s economy. Lakhs of people depend on Pujo for their livelihoods.”

She also expressed concern about the challenges of expressing personal opinions in today's digital age. “It’s very difficult to voice your thoughts on social media without facing a backlash,” she said.
