Life is not that easy for people living in the Sundarbans, the only coastal mangrove tiger habitat in the world, running from southern Bangladesh into India's West Bengal State. And for many, the mangrove forest is a crucial source of food and income. Sundarbans has so many stories to tell, yet we hardly find films set in the land where three great rivers merge.
And now, Sayan Bandyopadhyay has come up with a film set in the rural wilderness of Sundarbans and the lives of people who reside there. ‘Doaansh’ is a story of two young souls Jhumri and Dibakar lost their families in tiger attacks. How these two save themselves from the claws of illegal contractors ruling the area and how their lives change forever after a series of shocking events is the crux of this story.
Jhumri has her grandmother 55-year-old Sarathi Sardar by her side while standing against the evil elements of society. Not only searching for livelihood but the struggle to save Jhumri from the prying eyes of the forest contractor is inextricably intertwined with the life of Sarathi. Meanwhile, Dibakar, with the help of Nemai, starts his journey as a honey collector. When Dibakar goes missing deep in the jungle Jhumri reaches out to the contractor for help. What will happen now? Will Jhumri be able to convince the contractor to arrange a search party for Dibakar? Will she be trapped by the contractor? All these will be answered in the film.
Starring Sanjita Mukherjee,
Anubhav Kanjilal,
Sritama Dey, Payel Roy, Kingshuk Ganguly, and Nimai Shasmal in important roles, ‘Doaansh’ is a startling tale of how helpless people survive in Sundarbans.
While the story, dialogues and direction are by Sayan Bandyopadhyay, script is by Sumit Dam, and Shubhajit Roy is the DOP. Anirban Maity will edit the film.
