Director Soumik Sen, who started his career with Bollywood hit ‘Gulab Gang’, is ready to launch his career in Bengali cinema with ‘Mahalaya’. It’s produced by Prosenjit Chatterjee’s home production Nideas. He will also direct ‘Kolkata Company’ which stars Prosenjit in the lead.

Prosenjit initially urged Soumik to make a character-centric film but Soumik was eager to start working for ‘Mahalaya’ first. In a recent interview, he reportedly said ‘Kolkata Company’ wouldn't be possible without doing ‘Mahalaya’ first. This periodic drama can only be made in Bengali and for many reasons, he couldn’t start working on the film until recently. It’s a dream project for Soumik to make a film on the iconic ‘Mahishasur Mardini’ and the controversial incident involving it.

‘Mahalaya’ is all about the common people’s protest against the controversial replacement of ‘Mahishasur Mardini’. Jisshu Sengupta will play Uttam Kumar in this film. Subhamoy Chatterjee will play Pankaj Mullick and Subhashish Mukherjee will be seen as
