Dhritiman Chatterjee, whose latest ‘Shobdo Kolpo droom’ released last week, said that he never had any interest in mainstream films from the 60s and 70s. The veteran actor revealed that he rather preferred watching how renowned directors around the world worked instead of taking acting as a career.

Since his first film as the lead actor in Satyajit Ray’s critically acclaimed 1970 hit ‘

    Pratidwandi

’, the 73-year-old actor has worked under many award-winning directors such as Mrinal Sen, Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and others.

While speaking about his illustrious career in acting, the Dhritiman Chatterjee recently revealed his approach during his early days in the industry. “I consciously avoided accepting film offers more frequently. I had a lot more interest in the film society movement when I was studying economics at Presidency College and met world-class directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Shyam Benegal,” he stated.

The veteran actor also explained why he accepted Satyajit Ray’s offer, “When Satyajit Ray offered me the lead role in ‘Pratidwandi’, I was mainly focused on observing his style of working, rather becoming a full-time actor or so-called star in the industry. The same thing happened when I received the offer from Mrinal Sen’s ‘Padatik’.”

The versatile actor feels mainstream films those days were not for him, “The roles I was offered from the commercial films didn’t have the necessary scope to show my acting merit. Frankly speaking, it would have felt uncomfortable for me to do such roles and I also didn’t want to be typecast in my early days.”
