They had almost come together in Sob Charitro Kalponik. Rituparno Ghosh as the director and Anjan Dutt as the actor. But destiny had other plans and it is only now with Chitrangada ' The Crowning Wish that the two directors have worked together in a space, where both have emerged as enriched co-actors. Says Rituparno, who doubled up as an actor director for the movie, 'I had offered Anjan the role of a counsellor after he wrapped up Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona.
He understands the kind of acting I believe in and that helped a lot. He even rewrote a scene for me.'
Technically, all their scenes were shot with double cameras. What has been crucial is Dutt's way of negotiating silence. 'The only hint that I gave him was to be as deeply introspective as a young Satyajit Ray. In contrast to Ranjana where he was intense, Chitrangada required him to perform in a way that his patient doesn't feel intimidated. Even as an objective viewer, I believe this is one of Anjan's finest performances. He transmitted the delicacy of an acting skill that I absorbed like a student,' Ghosh says. Dutt, on his part, is happy with the synergy. 'Ritu had also shown me some photos of Ray when we were doing a workshop for the movie. There are few who can play the role of a gay man with so much of ease and empathy as Ritu. Chitrangada is Ritu's most mature performance as an actor,' Dutt adds. Chitrangada 'The Crowning Wish, produced by Shree Venkatesh Films Pvt. Ltd., releases on August 31.
