The HRD ministry’s directive to restrict weight of school bags and no
homework
for students of Classes I and II is welcomed by all. Here's what celeb parents in Tollywood have to say about the move.
BIRSA DASGUPTA
At times I get astonished when I see the weight of my daughter Ida’s school bag. I ask her if there are bricks inside! I really don’t know what she carries. This new directive should be implemented at the earliest. The kids suffer from backache, spondylosis from a tender age because of the weight of their school bags. Homework should be given on long vacations and not every day as the child should be allowed to enjoy education and not develop a fear of studies. I feel the process of basic learning should change.
SUDIPTAA CHAKRABORTY
My daughter, Shahida, goes to play school, so the pressure of homework is not there. After reading the article on prescribed school bag weight and no homework till Class II, I am so relieved. It will be beneficial for so many students. The global norm is to limit text books to school and here, I hear, many institutions are following that. I feel it should be the norm for all schools. Let the child get some space to enjoy his or her childhood.
PRIYANKA SARKAR
My son, Shohoj, is in senior KG and doesn’t have much homework other than on weekends. But I read the article on the ministry of human resource development’s directive that said the weight of school bags should be restricted and students in lower classes should be spared of doing homework. I welcome this directive with open arms. Education should be skill-based. Also, childhood should be enjoyed and no child should be bogged down with homework and exams. Let education move beyond books.
SREELEKHA MITRA
The weight of bags is a concern for my daughter, Oishi Sanyal, and me. She is in Class VII and I tell her how children today can do without exercising as the weight of school bags take care of their biceps and triceps. If the new directive is implemented, which the state government is looking into, it will be a welcome change for all. The pressure of homework is taking a toll on today’s students. Let studies be restricted to schools so that students get time to do other things.
SRABANTI
My son,
Abhimanyu
Chatterjee, is in Class IX, so he knows what books to carry to school. Previously, the weight of his school bag used to be double his body weight. I appreciate the directive issued by the HRD ministry. I have seen KG kids going for tuitions and their mothers cribbing about the homework they have to do! There should be no homework till Classes IV-V. Let the discipline of studying develop in schools and not at home.
