Biswajit Chatterjee joins BJP

Biswajit Chatterjee

has added another feather to his cap. On Monday, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi. Confirming the news to us over phone, he said, “Yes, I joined the BJP today. But I won’t be able to say anything beyond that, as I haven’t been briefed about anything else yet.”
The octogenarian actor-director, who has yesteryear hits like Bees Saal Baad in his kitty, is however, not new to politics. He was earlier associated with Trinamul Congress (TMC) and had even contested the 2014 elections under the TMC banner from New Delhi in 2014. The results, however, had not gone in his favour.
He has also been active in his original field — films — and last made a cameo appearance as Neil Nitin Mukesh’s grandfather in the 2009 film,

The highlight of his decades-long film career, which started in the late ’50s, were the songs picturised on him in his Hindi films — most of which were some of the biggest hits of yesteryears and are still counted among the most popular Bollywood songs of all time. Some of these songs include Aao huzur tumko, sitaron me le chaluun (Kismat, 1968), April fool banaya, to unko gussa aaya (April Fool, 1964), Bequarar karke hamen yun na jaaiye (Bees Saal Baad, 1962), Hamdam mere, maan bhi jao and Jaaiye aap kahan jaayenge (both from Mere Sanam, 1965), among others.
Though his political career hasn’t been as happening as his film career, it remains to be seen how his fresh association with BJP fares for the veteran actor.
