Biopic on Soumitra Chatterjee!

Since making his debut in Satyajit Ray’s 1959 classic ‘Apur Sansar’ Soumitra Chatterjee has managed to break all those preconceived notions of retirement – even at the age of 83, he is more active than ever. And now speculation is rife Parambrata Chattopadhyay is set to make a biopic on the thespian.

Looks like biopics will soon become a trend in Bengali cinema as well. We already know Srijit Mukherji is making a biopic on freedom fighter Bina Das, Anjan Dutt set for his film on Binay-badol-Dinesh and even Aniket Chattopadhyay is making a biopic on Padma Shri Subhasini Mistry.
And now we hear, a biopic on Bengali cinema’s living legend Soumitra Chatterjee is in the making.

So, who will don the director’s hat for this project? Speculation is rife actor-director Parambrata Chattopadhyay is likely to helm the biopic.
Soumitra Chatterjee himself has admitted the discussions are in primary stage only and there hasn’t been any decision on the cast as well. Interestingly, Parambrata himself may play a young Soumitra in the biopic. The thespian will be seen playing himself in the biopic.
Soumitra Chatterjee has managed to break all those preconceived notions of retirement – even at age of 83 he is more active than ever. He still remains an inspiration to actors all around the world showing us how to live life to the fullest. How lucky we are to be born in such an age of a wonderful maestro! He has become an artist of such a stature that no awards can define him anymore.
Not many people know despite his superb acting talent, a young Soumitra at the age of 20 was rejected in his screen test for the titular role of a 1957 Bengali film named ‘Nilachale Mahaprabhu’ directed by Kartik Chattopadhyay. Asim Kumar eventually played the titular role.
In 1959 the film legend made his debut with Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’ (the third installment of Apu trilogy).
The news of the biopic has doubled up the excitement among fans of Bengali cinema. Most of them can't wait for it to hit the screens. Bringing Soumitra's life on the celluloid will no doubt be a daunting task but Parambrata is ready to accept the challenge.
