Voting percentages increased after awareness video by Bickram Ghosh
The Election Commissions drive to increase awareness among the urban voters with Bickram Ghosh has seemingly hit the right chord. In comparison with the statistics of 2009 polls, the figures have gone up for both Kolkata South and North. The video featuring Bickram Ghosh urging the voters to exercise their rights have apparently had the desired effect.
1x1 polls
In 2009 the polling figures was 58.81 per cent for Kolkata South, which has gone up to 66.05 per cent. In North the figure was 64.38 per cent and has gone up to 65 per cent, said an official of the Election Commission.
The commission had roped in percussionist Bickram Ghosh and former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly and shot a promotional video urging people to cast their votes. Sourav was later dropped due to the controversy over his involvement with a particular political party. The video seemed to have had the desired effect which has been reflected in the polling percentages. Commission authorities had called me up to congratulate me on the success of the campaign. Initially I did have some trepidations but the shoot went very well. A familiar face in the video probably worked. However people have also become more aware and that has also increased the percentage of voting, said Bickram. The commission had shot the video with Bickram in front of the Victoria Memorial, in which he is seen performing live.
