We are accustomed to south Indian films being remade in Bengali. Taking a step further, Bengali director Aneek Chaudhuri is making a

Malayalam

film, which will be shot in Kolkata. The film will star

Biyon

— a Malayalam actor — with a career spanning 30 years.
“We needed to cast an actor who in no way looks like a ‘stereotyped’ killer. People should be shocked, or surprised when the person they prefer to admire is killing people, and that too, brutally. However, we owe a special acknowledgment to the respectful critics for helping us with the ideal actor for this character,” Aneek said.
Katti Nrittam — the Knife Dance, is a melancholic sociopathic thriller and a part of it is also loosely based on O Henry’s Cactus. The film tells the story of a failed

Kathakali

dancer who goes on a killing spree. The wildness is somehow neutralised by a mundane foreground, which narrates a complex tale of love. “Working with a new team has always excited me and this character has a lot more to say than a normal character does. It has a lot of depth in it. I have been able to get under the skin of this character. He is an artiste who has failed to express his emotions through his art form,” said Biyon.
The film is slotted for a 2020 theatrical release after making the festival rounds around the globe. Naturally, the director and his team are looking forward to a great time ahead.
