TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains references to death by suicide.
Renowned Bengali cinematographer Soumyadeep Guin, widely known in the industry as “Vicky,” was found hanging at his residence in south Kolkata. He was 40 years old.
As reported by India Today, authorities recovered his body around noon after his family discovered the tragic scene. While an official cause of death is still under investigation, police have not ruled out suicide and are probing all angles. This includes personal issues and professional setbacks.
Work struggles, depression
According to the reports, preliminary inquiry suggests Vicky was not receiving the kind of film assignments he had been expecting. This prompted concerns about financial distress and mental health. Reportedly, the officers broke into Bosepukur apartment after the neighbours complained of a foul smell.
According to investigators, prolonged lack of work and mounting stress could be the reason for his suicide. Reportedly, a police officer confirmed, “We have been told he may not have been getting the kind of projects he had been expecting in recent times… we are probing that angle as well. We have been told he was suffering from depression.”
Soumyadeep Guin had worked extensively in the Tollywood film industry. He has earned a good name by collaborating with prominent names like Raja Chanda and cinematographer-director
Premendu Bikash Chaki. He is survived by his wife and a young daughter. The Cinematographers’ Guild has announced that it will provide financial support to his family during this difficult period.
