After Uma and Shah Jahan Regency, actor-singer-politician
Babul Supriyo will play an “integral” part in
Srijit Mukherji’s
Gumnami Baba
. The film is on a reclusive sadhu who many thought was
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The former lived in UP’s
Faizabad
in the 1970s and ’80s and many who met him, claimed that he was the nationalist leader, whose reported death in a plane crash in 1945 was doubted by a section of people.
Taking to social media, the filmmaker wrote: “Finished off the three day recce outside Kolkata with a gargantuan feast of mutton at a dear friend and colleague Babul Supriyo’s place. Like Uma and Shah Jahan Regency, he is an integral part of #Gumnaami as well. Exactly in what capacity, we will find out soon!”
Babul, who wrote to Srijit on social media, hinted at keeping the development under wraps: “Let the topic we spoke about remain ‘Gumnaami’.”
When CT spoke to Babul, he said, “I can only say that I am a part of the film.” So, is it in the capacity of an actor or a singer? “We have had a discussion on the subject, but not on my role. It could even be as a singer,” he smiled and said.
Srijit had earlier courted controversy when Bose’s grand-nephew, Chandra Kumar Bose, suggested that it was a criminal offence to term Gumnami Baba as Netaji in disguise without concrete evidence. To this, Babul said, “I am not just a politician, but also an artiste. Being a part of this film is my artistic call.”
