The Aotea Square in Auckland, New Zealand, witnessed a peaceful two-day gathering over the weekend, with the participants signing a petition seeking justice for the doctor who was raped and murdered on Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital premises on August 9.
Speaking to us from Auckland, Sohini Chaudhury, a Jadavpur University alumnus, said they are seeking maximum punishment for the offenders. “We had a peaceful gathering of people from different ethnicities, regardless of their age, and signed a petition to demand justice for the doctor along with reforms aimed at safety of women. Various Bengali and English songs were played at the gathering and a few participants also spoke on the issue,” she added.

Shopan Dasgupta, one of the organisers, said, “What has happened is abhorrent and deserves the highest condemnation. The family of the victim deserves justice, and in saying that, we mean that the perpetrators should quickly apprehended and after a fair trial, sentenced to the highest punishment possible as per the Indian Penal Code.”
