Veteran director
Tarun Majumdar’s demise on Monday has cast a pall of gloom on the Bengali film fraternity.
Anik Dutta, who met the director a few months back when he had come to watch Aparajito, said, “I woke up in Oxford to hear the sad news of Tarunbabu (Tarun Majumdar) passing away. I had last met him the day before I left for the UK. He was in the ICU, fighting a losing battle bravely.
He was one of the very few brave people in our society and particularly our fraternity who stood up to the powers that be and didn't trade off his integrity for petty favours. He was the last of the Mohicans. One of the very few we looked up to as a guardian.”
Stating that he feels extremely fortunate that Majumdar came to watch Aparajito in a hall, Anik said, “After the show, he was very emotional and held me for a long time. I don’t know whether I truly deserve the overwhelming praises, affection and blessings that he showered on me. I know we cannot redeem the disregard that he had to suffer during his last few years. However, I will, in my small capacity, with all his admirers, try to restore his films and pay him the minimum respect that he so richly deserves.”
