Independent filmmaker

Aneek Chaudhuri

is all set for his multilingual feature film, which predominantly uses Malayalam as the primary language. The film is titled Katti Nrittam, meaning the knife dance and the shoot has already entered its final leg.
Aneek has unveiled the poster of the film and it is a hand-painted one. The film’s poster is in cyan blue theme and represents the melancholy of the film. The poster has been painted by Shruti Purkait, an artist based in Kolkata.

dancer. The film is a complex web of melancholic relationships. Talking about the poster, Aneek says, “I had always wanted it to be a hand-painted one; I have a fascination for things that are not completely perfect and wanted something that would leave an open-ended suggestion for the audiences. Then, I came across Shruti, whose paintings had left a considerable impression on me. I was convinced that she was the artist I had been looking for. And, we got a wonderful piece from her.”
The film draws inspiration from the neo-realist style of cinema and has a partly documentary-style approach. As per the director of this film, “Katti Nrittam was conceived when I visited Kalamandalam (Kerala) last year and I came across the various perspectives of performers. There was something that enticed me — it was their urge to stay real and at the same time, balance it with the tone of their performances.”
The film features actors from the National School of Drama and those with a theatre background. On this, he further adds, “This has to be filmed in a stage style. Hence, I thought it was a wiser idea to cast people coming from the theatre background, as they have a better understanding of the stage. Moreover, I will be utilising proximity as an important element in this film where a lot of POVs are to be used.”
