Social media is buzzing with discussions about the Bengali identity of two celebrated Bollywood actresses in the past few days. The debate revolves around who is more Bengali:
Alia Bhatt or
Deepika Padukone!
It all started ever since the trailer of ‘Roky Aur
Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ was released earlier this week. In Karan Johar-directed family drama Alia plays the role of a Bengali girl Rani Chatterjee.
And now, a section of social media is arguing that Deepika Padukone looked like a Bengali girl more convincingly in ‘Piku’ compared to Alia’s character Rani in ‘Roky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’.
Although none of these two Bollywood actresses have any Bengali roots in reality their onscreen Bong girl avatars have indeed kicked up a social media debate. We all know Deepika Padukone played a Bengali girl in the film ‘Piku’, directed by
Shoojit Sircar, sharing screen with
Amitabh Bachchan, who played her onscreen father. The film also featured the late actor Irrfan Khan and veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee in significant roles.
On the other hand, we have the much-anticipated film ‘Roky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, whose trailer has created quite a buzz, ahead of its big release later this month. As we have seen in the trailer, Alia Bhatt plays a Bengali character, opposite Ranveer Singh’s Rocky. The movie features prominent Bengali actors like Churni Ganguly, and
Tota Roy Chowdhury, alongside Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan.
After the trailer release, many have claimed that Alia does not seem convincingly Bengali, while others suggest that Deepika would have been a better fit for the role. Some social media users even posted pictures of Deepika from ‘Piku’ with captions like "a true Bengali woman”. However, there are others who firmly believe that Alia is the best choice for the character of a Bengali girl. Alia's fans are already excited saying they are thrilled to see her in a Bengali character.
Now, the anticipation builds for the film's release on July 28, as it will likely shed light on the question of who embodies the Bengali character better.
